An Altus man has been recently sentenced to life in prison for rape.

Altus police arrested 51-year-old Lewis Sanchez Hernandez, Jr. in December of 2014, just days following the incident.

According to a probable cause, Hernandez broke into a home right across the street from where he lived in central Altus around 12:38 a.m. on December 2.

The court document says the victim called police for help, saying a man had forced his way into her house and attacked her and that he was still inside.

According to reports, Hernandez knocked on his unsuspecting neighbor’s door. She opened only the interior door and listened through the locked exterior glass door as Hernandez asked to borrow a VCR.  She told him she didn’t have one and when she tried to close the door, Hernandez ripped open the glass storm door tearing it from the frame and began to physically and sexually assault her.  Eventually, she managed to get to a phone and call police.

As officers were approaching the house, they could reportedly hear the victim inside crying for help according to Deputy Police Chief Bill Perkins.

When police entered the home, they found Hernandez nude.

He was arrested after a struggle with police forcing one officer to tase Hernandez in order to take him into custody.

He pled no contest and was recently sentenced to life in prison for rape by instrumentation and sentenced to 20 years in prison for first degree burglary and another 20 years for kidnapping, to run consecutively.
