A Sayre man was charged recently with, among other things, 3rd degree burglary in Beckham County District Court after he allegedly was caught breaking in to a pickup truck. A report stated that the owner, allegedly shot the suspect.
According to a probable cause affidavit, 34-year-old Sean Robert Dearing was caught in late December allegedly taking items out of a parked truck by the owner of the vehicle. The document stated that one of the items the suspect attempted to take was a rifle that the owner would eventually take away from him. The document stated that the owner noticed that Dearing allegedly had other property that did not belong to him, and attempted to leave with the items. The owner yelled at the suspect to stop or he would shoot him. The affidavit stated that Dearing shouted “you’re dead!” multiple times and then allegedly reached for something in his pocket while he turned around. The owner thought it might be another gun that he knew was in the truck and shot Dearing in the leg.
Dearing was transported to Great Plains Regional Medical Center and then transferred to OU Trauma Center in Oklahoma City. The affidavit did not state his condition, however he was able to give an interview to police before being transferred.
During a search of the vehicle, police located a bag that had, among other items, two debit cards with a woman’s name on them, and a digital scale with a white residue on it that later field tested positive to be methamphetamine.
The affidavit stated that the suspect’s mother contacted authorities in search of information regarding her son’s case. It stated that she would identify the woman’s name on the debit cards as being her son’s girlfriend.
Dearing was charged with 3rd degree burglary, possession of a firearm after a former felony conviction, and possession of a controlled dangerous substance. A warrant for his arrest was issued earlier this month.
The owner of the pickup was not charged.
