Candidate filing for local school boards of directors is set to begin in about a week-and-a-half.
School board candidates will file their Declarations of Candidacy beginning at 8 am on Monday, December 2, according to Beckham County Election Board Secretary, Sherron Manning. Filing will continue at each county’s election board office until Wednesday, December 4 at 5 pm.
Basically, each school district’s Office #5 seat is open and the seat is for a 5-year-term. There are a few other seats open in select school districts around the area. Elk City additionally has a 4-year term seat for Office 4, Hammon has a 2-year, Office 2 seat open, Hydro-Eakly also has a 2-year, Office 2 seat open and Cordell has it’s Office #3 seat open, all in addition to the Office 5 seat.
In all, the Office 5 seat is open in these Western Oklahoma school districts:
Arapaho-Butler, Burns Flat/Dill City, Canute, Clinton, Cordell, Elk City, Erick, Hammon, Mangum, Merritt, Sentinel, Sweetwater, Thomas-Fay-Custer and Weatherford.
School districts, many times, overlap county boundaries and a school district thought to be in one county may actually fall into the adjoining county.
Custer County’s Election Board Secretary, Ann Brown says the Board of Education positions at stake will be filled at the upcoming Board of Education Primary Election scheduled February 11, 2020 only if three or more candidates file for a specific seat. If not, the Board of Education General Election will be held on April 7. If no candidate receives more than 50 percent of the total votes cast in the Primary Election, the two candidates receiving the highest number of votes will meet in the General Election.
