By Paragon News Director Paul Joseph –

North Fork Correctional Center in Sayre is giving back to the community, both from the inmates and the prison administrators.

Warden Jimmy Martin says periodically, the prison makes contributions from an inmate fund and the most recent donation from the fund went to the teachers of the Sayre Middle School.

Martin says, as an incentive, the inmates get to buy certain foods normally unavailable to the general population and a portion of that money is collected and donated. He says its called a food buy-out.

Martin recently gave a check of $15-hundred dollars to Sayre Middle School Principal Jason Bohannon to go toward helping defray the costs associated with a new school year.

It’s the first time the Middle School teachers have received their donation, but it’s not the first time North Fork has donated inmate money. Last year the prison donated to the high school band and before that it was to the Erick High School. Last month, the Mangum softball team was the buy-out recipient.

Martin says he’d like to challenge other organizations do similar contributions.

Martin says the money actually comes from the inmates. It’s generated there, but the administrative staff decides where to use it.
