Wheeler County Sheriff’s Deputies have arrested a man and woman on drug charges as the two were passing through the area on the interstate.

The man and woman that Wheeler County Sheriff Deputies believe were trafficking drugs are sitting in the county jail today.

They were arrested recently following a routine traffic stop by Deputy Jeff Baker. According to Chief Deputy, Donnie Carter, Baker had been patrolling Interstate 40 and pulled up next to a 2014 Nissan Sentra, a rental with Maryland tags, that immediately took an exit off the interstate.  Baker followed the vehicle that had stopped at an abandoned service station.

Carter says that after waiting 12-15 minutes on the man and woman to exit the car, Baker made a courtesy welfare check on them. The driver, 35-year-old Jeremy Shockey of Maryland and the passenger, 33-year-old Destany Dreyer from Arizona told Baker that had been westbound on the interstate.

While talking with the occupants, Baker noticed they were becoming increasingly nervous so he decided to conduct a free air sniff around their vehicle with the sheriff’s department, canine, “Robi” who alerted on the vehicle of a possibility of illegal drugs inside.

A search by Baker and Deputy Brandon Hoffman allegedly turned up an estimated six ounces of Methamphetamine along with a used glass pipe. Carter says the items were found under the dash on the passenger’s side.

They have been arrested on a felony drug charge and booked into the Wheeler County Jail on bonds of $20-thousand dollars, each.

According to the sheriff’s office, the estimated street value of the Methamphetamine is approximately $20,000.
