By Paragon News Director Paul Joseph –

The Merritt School System embeds coding into their curriculum.

To most people and almost everyone over 60, that statement is pure Greek, but that’s precisely what a second grade school teacher was heard to say recently when talking to a reporter.

She said, “We embed coding into our curriculum.”

But, what may be more difficult to understand is that Merritt schools teach their students how to teach the teachers and, Laura Splawn, says that happens quite often when the subject is either math or science. She says they call it a “flipped classroom.”

No only that, but Merritt school students will be spending one evening next week teaching their parents and the public how to code. It’s called “Parent Coding Night” and will be held at Merritt Middle School.

The second grade teacher, Splawn, says the school system uses coding in every subject.

Okay. Enough. The technology dinosaur has to ask the obvious. What does “embed coding” mean?

And coding is a type of computer language. It’s how computers receive a communication request and how it responds.

As part of their educational experience, Merritt school students are hosting a special night to teach the public how they use coding and will also teach how its done.

Splawn says they’ll be teaching how to use the “Swift Playgrounds” app in order to learn the basics to coding, what it is, how it works and what it’s used for. Its all going to be student led.

Parent coding night is Tuesday night, September 19 at the Merritt Middle School where they’ll show and teach technological dinosaurs how to code using Swift Playgrounds and Parrot Drones.

Doesn’t sound quite so Greek, now, does it?

Well, maybe a little.
