Tuesday is election day in Weatherford as voters go to the polls to cast their ballot on raising the local sales tax to improve local roadways.
City leaders have been on the speaking tour getting the message out about the advantages of the passage of raising the local sales tax by a half-cent.
Mayor Mike Brown says a number of roads within the city need attention and this measure is the best way to raise enough money to get them fixed.
He’s hoping the turn out will be good.
At issue is the raising the local sales tax from four-cents to 4-1/2 cents which will raise enough to address Lyle Road, the city’s most needy at this time.
Brown believes it has a pretty good chance of passage.
The $ 6-million dollars that the half-cent tax will raise over the next six years will just about pay for all of the expenses of Lyle Road, one of the city’s main north-south roadways – though there are a number of other roads that need attention.
The total sales tax, if approved (Tuesday), will go from 9-cents on the dollar to 9.5 as the state already has 4.5 cents along with the county of ½ cents.
Polls are open from 7 to 7.
