The Weatherford sales tax increase election is just around the corner and city leaders are on the speaking tour getting the message out about the advantages of its passage.

Mayor Mike Brown says a number of roads within the city needs attention and this measure is the best way to raise enough money to get them fixed.

He says city leaders have heard a lot of positive comments on their speaking trips to various non-profit, community groups.

At issue is the raising the local sales tax from four-cents to 4-1/2 cents which is expected to raise enough to address Lyle Road, the city’s most needy at this time.

The $ 6-million dollars that the half-cent tax will raise over the next six years will just about pay for all of the expenses of Lyle Road, one of the city’s main north-south roadways – though there are a number of other roads that need attention .

The city won’t have to wait six years, however, in order to start making repairs nor wait to have a bulk of the money in hand. City leaders are working with the Public Finance Law Group, an Oklahoma-based law firm, to finance the proposed project through the issuance and sales of municipal bonds.

The total sales tax, if approved next month, will go from 9-cents on the dollar to 9.5 as the state already has 4.5 cents along with the county of ½ cents.

The election is set for Tuesday, September 12.
