By Paragon News Director Paul Joseph –

A previously convicted Sayre man is in jail on bonds totaling $300-thousand dollars after being arrested and charged last week for trafficking illegal drugs as well as other charges.

36-year-old Arlis Gordon Scott told investigators that he was the decoy while traveling on Interstate 40 for another man ahead of him.

According to a probable cause affidavit, Scott was observed on the interstate by an Oklahoma Highway Patrol trooper for traveling at 78 miles an hour westbound on the highway.

While attempting to get Scott to pull over, the officer wrote that the driver, later identified as Scott, was driving erratically in front of him – speeding up then applying his brakes – several times. At one point, the officer says Scott threw an object out of the passenger window of the car onto the grass shoulder.

Later, the trooper allegedly found a pipe containing residue lying on the shoulder in the grass.

In his front pant pocket, the trooper found a cigarette box and baggie allegedly containing a white crystal substance that later tested positive for methamphetamine and another pipe on the driver seat with more residue.

After being incarcerated in the Beckham County Detention Facility, Scott, who has previous convictions in New Mexico as well as in Beckham County, was heard on a telephone call to his wife talking about his arrest after coming back from Oklahoma City. During the call, she is heard asking Scott if he came back empty handed.

In another phone call between the two, he was heard telling her that he’d thrown out of the car a black sock with a white sock inside it out of the passenger side window near the TA Travel Plaza between Sayre and Elk City.

After reviewing the phone calls, investigators found a black sock containing a white sock matching the description of the one Scott described. Inside it, they found that it allegedly contained a plastic baggie with a substance that tested positive for the presence of meth, weighing 93 grams as well as a small plastic bag containing additional meth weighing 8 grams.

During an interview, Scott told investigators that he was a decoy for a man traveling in a vehicle in front of him and that man threw the sock containing the meth out of his car. He added that it was his responsibility to escort the other man and the methamphetamine.

He’s been charged with trafficking in meth, conspiracy to trafficking meth, possession of a CDS, unlawful use of a police radio and possession of drug paraphernalia.

His preliminary hearing is set for August 15 in District Court.
