Excitement is building at the courthouse in Sayre as the Beckham County Commissioners approved to order a new carillon.
A carillon.
You know, a set of bells in a tower, played using a keyboard or by an automatic mechanism similar to a piano roll. However, the newest carillons are all digital that use horns, not bells.
Executive Assistant to the County Commissioners, Julie Swaner says this new carillon will do far more than anyone at the courthouse will ever ask of it.
Swaner, the caretaker of the carillon system, says the old one used outdated technology but got the job done – that is, until it stopped.
Of all the people at the courthouse with technical expertise, how did the executive assistant get tasked with the job of carillon – caretaker?
County Commissioners approved the expenditure this week of just a little over $14-thousand dollars for a little black box – half the size of a breadbasket – full of technology. It’s called the Supreme Carillon.
Swaner has been assured it’s easy to hook up and the information sheet says the new carillon unit should be here in 60-90 days.
And Swaner, she’s a little bit excited about it.
By the way, the title cut to the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, Oklahoma! Is called, “Oklahoma” – for future reference.
