By Paragon News Director Paul Joseph  –

Though the unveiling date on the new Elk City elementary school is still months off, the unveiling of its new name could come about in weeks, days actually.

Elk City School Board President Brandon Storm has been tasked with the enviable – or possibly – unenviable job of naming the new pre-K to Grade 3 building.

Storm says he may have the name as early as at the next school board meeting which is 14-days away. The naming of the new school seems to come way too soon.  Not so, according to Storm.

Storm says – according to board policy – the board president establishes the naming committee. And, Storm says, it’s up to the president to choose who is on the naming committee along with himself and it’s up to the president how many are on the committee.

The name could be unveiled Monday night, April 10. According to Storm, it’s none too soon for the School Superintendent Rick Garrison.  Storm says a lot of reshuffling has to be done between now and before school starts in August and having the name would make things flow a little easier – in that regard.

Early in 2015, school district and Elk City voters approved a school bond and raised the local sales tax in order to build the new elementary school as well as provide the financing for several other capital improvement projects.

Storm says not only will the new elementary school get a new name, with all the stacking and reshuffling of grades and personnel, there may be other new names, too. He says he and his naming committee may come up with more names – other than just the one for the newest school and they may try to “theme” the names.

The new elementary is set to open as early as October of this year, a few weeks after classes begin.
