Bond has been set for an Elk City man at $100-thousand dollars after he was arrested on suspicion of methamphetamine possession.
33-year-old James Calvin Smith, the third is in the Beckham County Detention Center awaiting his initial appearance in front of a judge.
Smith was recently arrested along with another person, 28-year-old Amberlynn Natasha Lout in the parking lot of the Elk City Wal-Mart after police were contacted about a shoplifting case.
According to the police report, when police arrived, they spotted a car leaving the parking lot that matched the description of one in which a possible suspect was seen. Both Smith and Lout were passengers in the vehicle along with Lout’s six-year-old son.
The officer wrote in the report that Smith argued with officers and had to be told repeatedly to comply with officers commands and was finally taken to the ground where he was handcuffed.
Later, Lout allegedly confessed to taking about $26-dollars’ worth of merchandise from the store.
During a search, Smith was allegedly found to possess both a white-crystal like substance and a green, leafy substance. Both later tested positive for illegal drugs, meth and marijuana. Also allegedly found were a syringe, a marijuana pipe and a pair of brass knuckles, found in his pockets.
The report says – at one point during his arrest – Smith tried to blow the crystal like substance off of the back of a patrol car where he’d placed it.
Lout was arrested for petit larceny and was released from the county detention facility on December 12. Smith was arrested for possession of a controlled, dangerous substance in the presence of a minor, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, obstructing an officer and destruction of evidence.
According to online court records, Smith is due in court in January for pre-trial motions regarding a January 2016 felony charge of possession of a CDS in the presence of a minor under 12 or within 1000 feet of a park or school.
