Charges are expected to be filed Tuesday afternoon or Wednesday morning against a Nevada man who allegedly murdered a Sayre man before setting his house on fire.
According to an agent with the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation, bond is being denied for 54-year-old Russell Hale Dumlao of Reno, Nevada who is lying unconscious in an Elk City hospital room.
Dumlao was found unresponsive in his pickup truck approximately 100 yards from the home where the homicide and arson took place. OSBI agent Danny Sanders says Dumlao may be unconscious from something he may have injested at the time of the murder.
The badly burned body of the victim, Jerry Essary, was found by Sayre police in a home in the early morning hours on Tuesday after receiving a tip that a homicide victim was inside the home in the 200 Block of South Broadway.
Essary’s wife, Pam, who was home at the time of the murder, told investigators that she witnessed her husband’s murder. She was treated and released at Great Plains Regional Medical Center in Elk City for injuries to her face that she received while allegedly being held against her will by Dumlao.
Sanders says he’s unsure how long Dumlao had been in Sayre, but says Pam Essary had been held for several hours in the home before she was able to escape. Sanders says she fled the home before the suspect set the house on fire. She hid in the neighborhood until law enforcement and fire fighters responded to the scene.
The investigator says they’re unsure at this time what killed Essary saying it may have been from a bullet or a beating or both. The investigation is taking Sanders to Dumlao’s home in Reno for more possible clues in Essary’s death.
Expected charges against Dumlao include 1st degree murder, 1st degree arson, kidnapping and convicted felon in possession of a firearm.
