Several homes were evacuated this afternoon north of Elk City as a result of a large grass fire being propelled by the gusty winds.
According to the Elk City Fire Department, about a dozen homes have been evacuated as a safety precaution over a mile area, from about five miles north of town on Pioneer Road and to the east for about a mile.
The fire had crossed Randle about 2:45 as winds gusting over 50 miles an hour kept fire fighters busy.
There have been no injuries.
The National Weather service has issued a Red Flag Warning until 6 pm, today, for windy conditions and low relative humidity. The warning is for all of southwest Oklahoma and a part of Northern Texas. Winds averaged from 25 to 40 miles an hour.
We’ll have a complete weather rundown at the bottom of the hour.
