Beckham County Sheriff Derek Manning said Monday that his deputies and K9 located 53.06 pounds of processed and packaged marijuana during a traffic stop early Saturday morning.
Manning said deputies were working traffic between Sayre and Elk City and clocked a vehicle on radar traveling eastbound in excess of 90 mph. The vehicle was stopped near Elk City.
The vehicle was occupied by two women, and the deputy making the traffic stop reported that he detected an odor he believed was marijuana.
“The K9 unit deployed during the traffic stop, and the K9 alerted to the presence of drugs in the vehicle,” Manning said. “Deputies then searched the vehicle and located several items of luggage and bags in the vehicle. Those were full of packages containing what appeared to be processed marijuana. Elk City units came out to the location of the stop and assisted the deputies, and we appreciate their help and the use of their facility to interview the driver and passenger.”
Manning said the driver later told the deputies they were taking the load from Compton in California to Georgia.
Both women were arrested on complaints of trafficking and booked in to the Beckham County Detention Center.
“This was actually the first shift worked after graduating from CLEET for one of the deputies, Trey Hale,” Manning said. “He was on a check-ride with our K9 deputy, Aaron Allen, and he made the traffic stop. I appreciate the work of both of these deputies. Criminal interdiction on Interstate 40 is an important part of what we do, and I commend them for their efforts.”
