Drought Update

August 17, 2022

By News Director Jared Atha

The latest drought monitor that was released last week shows little improvement for western Oklahoma.

But relief, in the form of financial aid, is available.

According to the monitor, most of the southern half of Oklahoma is experiencing extreme drought conditions, with these conditions appearing to be more widespread than the previous drought monitoring map.

Much of western Oklahoma, including Beckham, the northern half of Washita, and Custer Counties show to be in a severe drought, while Roger Mills County, who has benefited from recent rains, shows to be in a moderate drought.

It appears that there are pockets of extreme drought throughout the panhandle and northeastern parts of Oklahoma, as well. with parts of Harmon and Jackson county struggling with “exceptional drought”.

The severe drought conditions continue to take a toll on Oklahoma farmers and ranchers, but the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Farm Service Agency (FSA) is now accepting applications for the Livestock Forage Disaster Program (LFP) to provide financial assistance to eligible livestock producers for grazing losses due to drought and/or wildfire.
