Smoke from a grass fire is to blame for a four vehicle pile up on Interstate 40 near Sayre Friday afternoon.

According to the collision report provided by the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, the accident occurred at 2:21p.m. in the eastbound lanes near mile marker 25 when a 2019 Ford F-350 slowed down while driving through smoke blowing across the road due to a nearby grass fire. OHP said a 2019 Ford Fiesta driven by 55-year-old Jonathan Hicks of Ardmore struck the F-350 from behind. Subsequently, a 2020 Ford Explorer driven by 81-year-old Gerald Worrall of Albuquerque, New Mexico struck the Fiesta.

OHP said Hicks and a passenger, were both taken to OU Medical Center in Oklahoma City where they were last listed to be in critical condition.

Worrall was treated and released from Great Plains Regional Medical Center in Elk City, however a passenger, 81-year-old Frieda Worrall was admitted into the same hospital with trunk internal injuries – last listed to be in stable condition.
