A warrant has been issued for a 57-year-old Clinton man, charged with domestic assault and battery by strangulation, after former conviction.

According to a probable cause affidavit, bond has been set at $50-thousand dollars for Vernal Washington.

The court document says Clinton police met with Washington’s girlfriend recently who told police that he had allegedly pushed her while in their residence, punched her in the left side of her face three times, before allowing her to leave. Then as she was walking away from from the residence, the two began to yell at each other. When Washington began running toward her, she ran away from him, but when he caught her, he allegedly pushed her into the side of a vehicle. When she fell, he stood over he and choked her for about 5 seconds.

She walked to the Clinton police department to report the incident. Police there observed swelling on the left side of her face and an abrasion on her left knee.

Washington has convictions for assault and battery with a dangerous weapon from 1992 and theft of a controlled dangerous substance from 2018, both in Custer County as well as several criminal misdemeanors.
