Western Oklahoma law enforcement agencies are getting their first chance Wednesday afternoon to interview the person-of-interest, thought to be connected to the Sunday morning murders in Elk City and Sayre.

Officers with the Elk City police department along with Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation’s Special Agent Dannie Sanders are in Tulsa with the intent to interview 48-year-old Gregory Eugene Killough of Tulsa, a formerly convicted felon.

Chief Eddie Holland says they want to talk to him if he chooses to talk and aim to get him back in Beckham County as soon as possible. Holland says Killough will remain a person-of-interest until warrants for his arrest are submitted and he anticipates that will happen by Thursday.

Meanwhile, the Oklahoma Medical Examiner has released the names of the deceased victims. The woman found dead in a Elk City parking lot just before 4:20 am Sunday with a gunshot wound to the head is 46-year-old Monique Stephen Smith, known as “Mo,” with a last known address of 111 Saddler Street in Sayre, Oklahoma. Her body was found near apartments on North State Avenue.

Smith has a long history associated with Killough. Though the case was later dismissed, she’d been arrested with Killough in 1992 for possession of a stolen vehicle while Killough was charged with a number of other felonies in the case including attempted robbery with a firearm and eluding police. The case was dismissed because the prosecution witness failed to appear.

Following the finding of the body in Elk City, detectives joined Sayre police and together made entry into the home where the second victim’s body was found, a victim of a homicide. He’s been identified as 67-year-old Norman Gene Burden. Burden was the owner of Gene Burden Trucking in Elk City.

Killough was taken into custody by Tulsa Police after being pulled over driving Burden’s vehicle. A handgun was found inside the vehicle.

Killough has been identified as a person of interest because he was last seen with Smith an hour before her death.
