By Paragon News Director Paul Joseph –

There’ll be a big-time, national celebration next week at the US Post Office in Anadarko as the Postal Service celebrates one of its lobby “government-commissioned artworks.”

Albert Ruiz, Strategic Communications Specialist for Oklahoma and Dallas, says the work of art honored is one of the 16 murals inside the post office in Anadarko.

In the 1930’s, President Roosevelt’s administration began commissioning artwork inside post offices. It was to help provide jobs for artists during the Great Depression and to preserve history and culture.

Ruiz says the Post Office mural stamps are being issued as Forever stamps and will always be equal in value to the most current First Class, 1-ounce stamps.

Ruiz says the Anadarko Post Office mural is one of five in the nation, featured on recently released stamps.

He says the Post Office is committed to the upkeep of these classic paintings and has a federal preservation officer and historian to help maintain the beauty and also to educate the public about their place in postal lore.

Ruiz adds that the Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations.
