A Sayre man has pled guilty to cruelty to animals, but will serve no additional jail time.
54-year-old Jimmy Lynn Adams was in Beckham County District Court recently where he pleaded guilty to six felony counts of cruelty to horses found on his property back in July of 2018 and was given a five-year suspended sentence. During a welfare check by county deputies, the horses were found in various stages of neglect. A number were seized at the time and taken for immediate medical treatment. One horse later died.
The probable cause affidavit says some horses on the property appeared to be in better physical condition during the initial investigation while others appeared to be in extremely poor condition, others appeared malnourished with their ribs showing. Initial observations revealed that a number were in extremely poor condition and that an immediate response was necessary to protect the horses.
The attending veterinarian told deputies that the horse that died did so as a result of a lack of nutrition due to neglect.
In July of last year and following the receipt of a search warrant for the seizure of animals at the residence, Adams joined deputies on a tour of his property and later admitted that he understood that there was not enough food to sustain the number of horses he had.
Originally charged with 10 counts of neglect, the other four were dismissed by prosecutors.
