By Paragon News Director Paul Joseph –

After laying off for a few years, two local county extension agents are partnering to present another Master Gardener class, a certified program whose graduates can represent the Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service and grow beautiful tomatoes and roses.

Okay. That last part doesn’t automatically go with the first, but there’s some truth in it.

Greg Hartman, Beckham County’s OSU Ag Extension Agent and his counter part in Roger Mills County, Dan Cook are partnering again to put on the Master Gardener program.

Hartman says classes will start on Monday night, September 24 and will be held each Monday night for 12 weeks at the Western Technology Center in Elk City. The registration fee is $75 and registration must be called into either the Roger Mills or Beckham County Extension office. He says the class is limited to the first 40 and they’re getting close to that.

Hartman says they’ve had a number of classes over the years, beginning in 2005.

Hartman says about 30 people have already committed to the upcoming program.

He says it’s a serious class for seriously interested people.

Upon graduation, Hartman says class participants will have a basic knowledge of soils, annuals, perennials, vegetables, landscaping, turf care, plant pathology, entomology, fruits and nuts as well as hold the title of Master Gardener as long as a person is under the OSU umbrella.

Master Gardeners are representatives of the extension service and follow the research-based recommendations of the extension service.
