An Elk City woman remains in critical condition in an Oklahoma City hospital following a wreck over the weekend on a highway south of Carter in Beckham County.
56-year-old Verla R. Thompson was air transported and admitted to OU Medical Center following the accident while driving a 2006 Buick on State Highway 34. She’s suffering from arm and internal injuries.
According to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, Thompson was northbound on the highway when she, reportedly, bent over to retrieve an object in the vehicle. The vehicle departed the roadway to the left and struck a fence and then a tree.
The report says the cause of the collision was inattention.
It happened about 4:14 pm Saturday afternoon about five miles south of Carter.
Seat belts were equipped in the vehicle and in use by Thompson.
