By Paragon News Director Paul Joseph –

37 firefighters from five communities responded to a fire in Sayre that destroyed two residential units but caused no injuries.

The bellowing black smoke could be seen as far away as Merritt during Wednesday’s late afternoon fire.

All together, two residential structures were destroyed in a fire that began in an unapproved wood stove that had been built inside an RV. The occupant of the RV escaped injury from the structure that eventually spread to a nearby house which was destroyed. Both houses sat on a short, dead-end street, Oklahoma Street only about three blocks long.

Fire Chief Robert Ahrens says the fire departments of Sayre, Erick and Delhi were helping battle a grass fire with the Sweetwater Fire Department when fire personnel noticed smoke originating from Sayre and responded.

Personnel from all three departments plus Carter and Berlin pitched in to bring the blaze in Sayre under control.

Ahrens says problems associated with AT&T communications complicated the response time forcing fire personnel to utilize radios to communicate logistics.

Firefighters got on the blaze around 5:15 and reported back to the fire station after extinguishing it out around 9:30.
