A Texas man, suspected in an Altus murder is being held in the Jackson County jail without bond.
35-year-old Gaylon A. Dorsey, from Wichita Falls, was arrested Tuesday night in a field about three miles south of Cordell following a high speed car chase through two counties that began in Hobart.
Dorsey was captured after he’d fled from a stolen vehicle on foot. The vehicle was spotted on fire in some trees but was later extinguished without injuries.
According to Altus police, he refused to cooperate with investigators, but was later booked into the jail on numerous felony charges including suspicion of first-degree murder.
The vehicle is thought to belong to the victim, identified as 37-year-old Quincy Lamont Brown of Altus. His body has been sent to the state medical examiner’s office to determine the manner and cause of death.
According to a report, Altus police responded to shots being fired on Tuesday afternoon just before 2 pm. After arriving to a home in the 200 block of South Jackson, they found a man suffering from a fatal gunshot wound to the chest.
Later, around 4:55, the Washita County Sheriff’s Office was notified about a pursuit involving a Kiowa County deputy and a white 2006 Chevy Cobalt travelling north on US Highway 183. Authorities later said it belonged to Brown and was stolen from the scene of the homicide.
More than 30 lawmen were involved in the pursuit and capture including lawmen from Jackson, Washita and Kiowa Counties, Cordell, Hobart, Altus police departments, Oklahoma State Game Wardens and members of the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.
Captain Brad Neidy with Troop H out of Clinton says an OHP airplane used thermal imaging to spot Dorsey after dark in a field lying in open ground and troopers on the ground were directed to Dorsey where he was apprehended, offering no resistance and found with no weapons.
Dorsey was turned over to detectives with the Altus Police Department after he was apprehended.
Charges have not been filed as of Thursday afternoon and jailers at the Jackson County Jail believe it’ll be next week before formal charges are filed.
