As part of his re-sentencing process, Tucker Ryan McGee is set to appear in Custer County District Court on Friday.
A jury found that McGee shot and killed then 16-year-old JaRay Wilson on a county road north of Weatherford in October of 2012 and was later sentenced by a judge to life without parole in April of 2015.
In December of 2016, a higher court tossed out McGee’s sentence and ordered him to be re-sentenced. He’s been in and out of court since then.
McGee’s attorneys are currently seeking an opportunity to have a psychological expert provide input. Those evaluation findings are expected on Friday and there’s a chance that a new trial date will be set for McGee.
The higher court’s December 2016 opinion said, in part, that “there was no evidence of important youth-related considerations” during the earlier trial, such as the juveniles immaturity, the “incompetencies associated with youth” and whether the circumstances suggested the “possibility of rehabilitation.” It ordered that the sentence be reopened.
The higher court ordered McGee to be re-sentenced in Custer County District Court and that is expected later this year in Arapaho.
The then 16-year-old JaRay Wilson went missing for more than a year following her murder before her remains were found in the rural area known as “Marijuana Field.” Her photo had appeared on billboards in Western Oklahoma as well as the OKC metro area and theories surrounding her disappearance included one that she had been sold into human trafficking.
The Friday status conference is set for 1:30 in Arapaho.
