A recent mermaid sighting at Foss Lake has everyone talking prior to a big, upcoming event at the lake’s marina.
What’s believed to be two mermaids were spotted near the marina and visitors hope they return soon, perhaps at the upcoming Capt’n Jon’s, 2nd Annual Water Carnival.
Co-owner of Capt’n Jon’s Marina and Grill located on the south end of the lake, Garla Wisdom says she expects as many as a couple hundred people for the carnival, especially in light of the recent mermaid sighting. Plus, this year, Wisdom is adding a new, competitive event called, Barnacle Bill’s Boat Race.
The 2nd Annual Water Carnival and Boat Race is Saturday, August 19 and everything is free. It all begins at 9 am with the Boat Race at the marina.
Wisdom believes the chance to see a real, live mermaid will turn out lots of spectators and she believes they’ll be back for a return appearance that Saturday.
As for the new event, Barnacle Bill’s Boat Race will have three classifications that teams could win: most creative design, the most team spirit and enthusiasm and the most sea worthy.
Wisdom says they decided to add the event to encourage the whole family’s participation in one of the last big weekend’s before the Labor Day Weekend – which is the last weekend that the marina is open.
Wisdom says it’s not a guarantee that the mermaids will be back, but thinks there’s a good possibility. She says if they do come back, they’ll be invited to speak on some topics they find of interest, like water quality and water safety.
She says a complete listing of boat race rules can be found on the Capt’n Jon’s Marina Facebook Page.
